Voltaic Cells (Chemistry)

Post ni ditujukan khasnya kpd rakan saya, Topui, yg menanyakan soalan tentang Daniel Cell kpd saya petang tadi, dan amnya kpd semua orang yang suka baca blog. Sebenarnya, masa hng dok tanya tadi, aku pon tak berapa pasti pasai Daniel cell ni. Aku main agak saja tadi. Jadi, berikut ialah penjelasan sejelasnya tentang Daniel cell...

1. What is a Daniel Cell?

2. It consist of a zinc electrode dipped in zinc sulphate, and copper electrode dipped in coper (II) sulphate.

3. One of these solutions is kept in a porous pot. Porous pot functions to stop zinc sulphate and copper (II) sulphate from mixing, but still allows electron to pass through it.

4. Of course, zinc will become negative electrode, while copper will become positive electrode (based on position in electrochemical series).

5. When zinc is the negative electrode, this means that zinc will give out ions. These ions will travel up the wire to the copper electrode.

6. Zinc will lama-kelamaan become thinner, because it 'dissolves' into zinc2+ ions, by giving away electrons to the copper electrode.

7. Copper pulak will become thicker, as copper2+ ions will discharge at copper electrode and copper will be deposited there.

8. Conclusion; Zinc electrode jadi negative electrode(cathode), copper electrode jadi positive electrode(anode). Cathode will become thinner, anode becomes thicker. Electrons given out at cathode will travel up the wire to the anode. That is all.

Terima kasih.
