Strings of Thought

Pocket Rocket

Call me simple, but I'm admittedly a sucker for small cars. I appreciate the kind of simplicity that only a small car could offer. Well, you don't need much to be happy...

The annual Geneva Motor Show is happening next week, and the smallest car on display will be the Mini Rocketman Concept.

Thoroughly modern and properly petite, the rocketman is as close as you'll be able to get to the original 1959 Mini, size-wise.

Since small should equal lightness, the engineers over at Mini go to considerable lengths such as using a carbon spaceframe for the main construction of the body to reduce overall weight. Weight-saving wheels which help reduce drag are also included in the package. Fuel economy figures are staggering; 3 liters per 100 km. What's driving the Rocketman isn't confirmed, but something electric is surely at work under the hood...

So it's small, light, and clean. The perfect package...

The design of this small wonder is a far cry to its original ancestor, but it's not totally unrecognisable. I would say that the Rocketman is a feasable modern reinterpretation of the 1959 Mini; modernity, with a hint of history. Mini enthusiasts would undoubtedly recognise the capped roof, double-hinged doors, and the wraparound window design. New light designs, especially the rear lights, which look like handles you can actually grab on to, and a neat-looking front grille, adds a touch of freshness. Not to be missed is the pie`ce de re'sistance of the whole vehicle; a light-up Union Jack adorning the glass capped roof. Now look me in the eyes and tell me that is not patriotic... Hell unique;

Interior design is standard concept-car affair, with shiny bits and pieces everywhere. Again, the unmistakable Mini design language is present, with the all-important circular center console crowning the dashboard. The steering wheel features trackball technology that lets you roll and press to choose between available options. I almost forgot; the doors open outwards and forwards! Pretty cool, huh?

My heart leaps with joy at the thought of a production version of the Mini Rocketman.

Because small is simple;

Mastretta

This is a Mexican sportscar.

Please, this is not an attempt to poke the bellies of the Mexicans; A certain controversial automotive-related television show had already done that two weeks ago.

Racism issues aside, it's a pretty decent sportscar. The guys at Mastretta did not get enough deserved recognition for their hard work and effort put into designing and building Mexico's first national car. Good thinking, starting a national automotive industry with a sportscar; Bold...Very bold...

Mastretta is originally an established Mexican public transportation manufacturer...

Anyways, the car got its deserved attention recently, albeit not in the best possible way; being laughed at on British television. Interestingly, after that laugh affair on Top Gear, traffic began skyrocketing on Mastretta's website, and the car, which is dubbed the MXT, received increasing orders from Europe, Brazil, and Chile...

Not bad...

Because there's no such thing as bad publicity;
